A fire that damaged a Brooklyn apartment building Friday night sent 23 firefighters and two residents to the hospital.
According to fire officials, the fire started just before 6 p.m. in the top floor of a six-floor, 84-unit building at 57 Lincoln Road in Prospect Lefferts Gardens in Brooklyn.
"I'm noticing the whole sixth floor is out. Completely burned out," said a first-floor resident who saw the damage from the street.
The hospitalized resident and firefighters had minor injuries, but one firefighter complained of chest pains.
It took nearly 200 firefighters to subdue the fire.
"We had heavy fire out the building," said Assistant Fire Chief Joseph Pfeifer. "Firefighters went in very quickly, evacuated and made searches of the building and got all the people out."
The blaze was confined to one side of the building, and then put out after an hour and a half.
Five apartments in the top floor were heavily damaged and nine other apartments were affected by the fire.
Other apartments below had water damage.
Those who were left homeless by the fire went to the Red Cross's reception center at the Jackie Robinson School at 46 McKeever Place.
"Our kids are tired. They're hungry. They want to get off their feet. We need some information," said an evacuated resident.
Late Friday, officials were investigating what started the fire.
