19 Firefighters Injured In NYC Apartment Blaze

Associated Press

Nineteen New York City firefighters have been injured fighting a blaze that consumed the top floor of a Brooklyn apartment building.

Fire officials say 15 firefighters had minor injuries and four were hurt more seriously, but their injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Two civilians were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

The blaze began in Brooklyn's Flatbush neighborhood just before 6 p.m. Friday in the space between the building's roof and the ceiling of the top floor.

The fire spread to the entire sixth floor of the building in an hour, spewing smoke throughout the neighborhood. It was brought under control at around 8:15 p.m.

The Fire Department says about 250 firefighters were sent to the scene.
