Fire Department Uses Deadly Fire's Lessons To Teach City Residents

NY 1

Tuesday night’s deadly yet preventable fire in Upper Manhattan was used Wednesday to educate New Yorkers about fire safety.

The FDNY set up a workshop on West 148th Street less than 24 hours since a blaze broke out in an apartment building there.

Investigators say rubbing alcohol accidentally ignited when it was used next to a lit candle.

A father and son jumped to their deaths trying to escape the flames.

Neighbors say they plan to use battery-operated candles to prevent another accident.

"I have grandkids in my household, and we'll try to purchase these and have them in my household also," said resident Marcy Jenkins.

"You don't even know when that can happen to you, but if you're aware and you get educated then you probably try to avoid that,” said resident Millie Glas. “It’s terrifying -- you only fear for them, but you know it can happen to anyone."

Several apartments on the fifth and sixth floors of the scarred building were still were still out of commission Wednesday night.
