Candles, Rubbing Alcohol To Blame For Deadly Fire

NY 1

Fire officials say candles and rubbing alcohol sparked a fire last night that killed a man and child in Upper Manhattan.

Officials say fumes from rubbing alcohol being used near a lit candle, set off the flames, which broke out around 8:40 p.m. on the fifth floor of a six-story building on West 148th Street in Hamilton Heights.

Authorities say the two victims jumped from the building to escape the flames.

Fire officials say the man was 45 years old and the boy was about five or six.

"It's believed that they were together and jumped from one window in the living room from the sixth floor apartment," said FDNY Deputy Assistant Chief John Sudnik.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The boy was taken to the hospital in cardiac arrest, where he later died.

Eight other people were injured, including two firefighters. No names have been released.
