NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- In a ceremony held Sunday morning for late Firefighter Daniel Pudjak, a plaque was dedicated in honor of the fallen firefighter.
During the ceremony, also attended by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, it was announced the street in front of Ladder 146 will be renamed for the fallen firefighter.
The firefighter fell from a rooftop and died one year ago while tackling a blaze apparently caused by a burning cigarette in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn.
Pudjak, 23 of Queens, had climbed up a ladder and was preparing to cut a hole in the four-story building's roof to vent the smoke when he fell. He screamed while he tumbled to the ground, witnesses said.
He suffered serious head injuries, the fire department said, and he was pronounced dead at a hospital.
More than 60 firefighters from 12 units were at the building, which was erected in 1920. No other injuries were reported.
Fire marshals believe the blaze was caused by a lit cigarette left near a window, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.
