Officials Investigate Fire that Destroyed Douglaston Home

NY 1 - August 15, 2012

The cause of a fire that destroyed a home in Douglaston, Queens Tuesday night is under investigation. The fire broke out around 8 p.m.

The home, located on Douglaston Parkway, was unoccupied at the time.

About 100 firefighters responded to the scene.

The New York City Fire Department said the fire spread to the side of a neighboring home that was occupied but they were able to get in under control and no injuries were reported.

"I heard at least two explosions, very loud, one was louder than the other, quite loud explosions," said one witness. "I have no idea what it was. Nothing different, just a massive wall of high fiery flames."

"The flames were going about 30, 40, 50 feet in the air," said another. "It seemed to be so fast."

The fire department said construction workers were at the house earlier in the day working on an extension to the home.
